Did you wonder what dance Jasmine from Aladdin would have done? Every princess has her dance, and the belly dance would be a sure fit for princess Jasmine. I put together a line dance belly dance tutorial for princess Jasmine.
Belly dancing, originally known as oriental or eastern dance, has been around for 6000 years. Roots of belly dance can be found dating back to ancient Egypt. They had two class of dance, one for performance and one social gatherings.
The performance dance was said to be used by travelers and gypsies to fund their trips. It got its name “belly dance” from the painting “The Danxe of Almeh” by Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1863. The Social version is danced to this day by women in the middle east when they gather and celebrate festivals and weddings. This is likely the version that Princess Jasmine would have done.
Veils are a staple of belly dance costumes. History points to the Arabian use of veils 2300 yrs. ago. By forcing lower class people to cover their nose and mouth they depersonalized them. This was kept for the women in the harems. This is likely why Jasmine is never veiled.
Was Aladdin based on a true tale? Yes and no. There is an Indian variation called “the magic lamp” from the Santal people that is very similar to the Aladdin tale. However, the original tale was an ‘orphan tale’ included in the “Arabian Nights” as an aural tradition in the late 1800’s by Antoine Galland. This tale was not part of the original transcripts. This Aladdin was the tale of an oriental youth going into the Middle east to seek his fortune. Originally Aladdin’s love was Badroulbadour (Arabic for ‘full moon of full moons’), not Jasmine.
Galland acquired Aladdin from the oral tale told him by Diyab. Diyab told his own tale as his travel memoire confirms. From peasant, to honoring king Loui in Versailles, he lived a full and adventuresome life that he used to craft the story of Aladdin. As researcher Horta puts it. “The day Diyab told the story of Aladdin to Galland, there were riots due to food shortages during the winter and spring of 1708 to 1709, and Diyab was sensitive to those people.”
