The VinePair Podcast: What We Look for When We Travel

How does the VinePair team survey different drinking subcultures and trends when traveling around the world? It’s a multifaceted question with a multifaceted answer.

Of course, many trends and styles of bartending are unique to the vibes of certain cities, and therefore don’t have what it takes to catch on from coast to coast. Consider flair bartending and the use of showy bartending gadgets in places like Miami and Las Vegas. But then there are other fads we notice that have the potential to proliferate like wildfire, and often it’s only a matter of time before they do so. Detecting these trends isn’t just about observation and hitting up bars we read about online. We often need to go beyond the press and talk to bar operators to get a sense of what’s actually hot and where drinks do — or don’t — live up to their media-given hype.

On this episode of the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam, Joanna, and Zach discuss what they look for when traveling: how best to try to get the sense for a local drinks scene, the amount of prep work they do, and how they assess whether styles and trends are viable on a larger scale or will likely remain localized. Tune in for more.
